Promote responsible alcohol service in restaurants

During Alcohol Awareness Month, review how your operation handles alcohol service. To help staff prepare for potentially difficult service situations throughout the year, reference these tips:

  • Understand alcohol responsibilities. Alcohol laws vary greatly between states, and each state oversees alcohol sales. Citations can be issued for violations, including selling alcohol to a minor, serving a guest who is intoxicated, and selling or serving alcohol at times or occasions when it is not permitted. These violations can result in fines, suspension or revocation of an establishment’s liquor license, or losing a server’s license. Avoid penalties by following your jurisdiction’s legal requirements.
  • Confirm employees have completed alcohol service training. When staff is equipped with alcohol service knowledge, they can do their jobs more confidently and accurately. Responsible alcohol training and certification programs, such as ServSafe Alcohol, are for servers, hosts, security staff, valets and other customer-facing employees that interact with guests.
  • Keep training ongoing. Talk about the importance of responsible alcohol service to your staff. Answer any questions they may have, and reiterate how their actions can impact themselves, customers and your business. For quick refreshers, ServSafe Alcohol also offers program participants guides, charts and exercises about responsible alcohol service.
  • Model responsible alcohol service. If you are certified to serve alcohol to guests, follow the correct procedures for every guest all of the time. When your staff sees that responsible service is embraced from the top down, they are more likely to take risks seriously.
