Big data: Get insights on what it means for restaurants

Big data: You hear the term a lot. But what does it mean for your restaurant?

The National Restaurant Association’s new white paper, “Big Data and Restaurants: Something to Chew On,” offers a snapshot of what big data is, how restaurants use it, and how you can get started.

Using case studies and checklists, the paper looks at the heavy volume of data coming into a restaurant, including the data restaurants generate internally through POS systems and data flowing from outside the restaurant, such as through social media.

Restaurants are working to meld internal and external data to get more efficient, enhance the dining experience, reduce costs, and maximize their marketing ROI, the case studies show. The paper also outlines four steps restaurants should follow to protect the privacy of guest data.

“Our research shows that technology use is increasing in restaurants,” said Phil Kafarakis, chief innovation officer for the National Restaurant Association. “Innovation will be critical to restaurant success, and we’re making sure our members have the tools needed to navigate new technology.”

The NRA worked with Heartland, GuestMetrics, Altametrics and Fishbowl to develop the white paper.
