Calif. congressman McCarthy to speak at public affairs conference

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, will be a featured speaker at the National Restaurant Association’s 27th annual Public Affairs Conference next month.

Congressman McCarthy, who represents the 23rd District of California, which spans Kern, Tulare, and Los Angeles counties, will join renowned political consultants Paul Begala and Alex Castellanos as the conference’s keynote speakers. First elected in 2006, he is a native of Bakersfield and a fourth-generation Kern County resident. He was elected Majority Whip by his colleagues following the 2010 midterm elections.

A former restaurateur, Rep. McCarthy started Kevin O's Deli before the age of 21. During his time as a small business owner, he hired employees and enjoyed success as a local businessman in his community. But, he noted, that also is where he first became knowledgeable about the taxes small business operators encounter. It also spurred his interest in pursuing a career in public service.

After receiving his undergraduate and Master’s degree in business administration from California State University, Bakersfield, he sold his business and began his career in politics.

Today, McCarthy is promoting policies that empower the private sector to invest in and create jobs, he said.

This year’s conference theme, “Carry the Message – America Works Here,” is part of the National Restaurant Association’s ongoing campaign to tell the industry’s story as a leading job creator to opinion leaders.

The restaurant industry is the nation’s second-largest private sector employer of more than 13 million individuals and an engine of economic growth. The America Works Here slogan encompasses the industry’s workforce, its diversity and the opportunity the industry provides, as well as the integration of the business into Americans’ daily routines. The nation's nearly 1 million restaurants serve 130 million people daily.

During the conference, to be held April 17-18 in Washington, D.C., attendees will participate in Capitol Hill meetings where they will provide members of Congress and their staff members with first-hand experiences articulating the need for pro-growth policies, including tax and immigration reforms, as well as reforms to the 2010 health care law.

The conference agenda also will include the Gala Restaurant Industry Awards program that honors the winners of the 2013 Faces of Diversity and Restaurant Neighbor awards.
