California Milk Board sponsors healthful child nutrition program

The California Milk Advisory Board has signed on to become the latest sponsor of the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell nutrition program.

The California group is the first commodity board to sponsor the NRA’s award-winning initiative, which celebrates its third birthday this month.

Kids LiveWell debuted in 2011 to help restaurateurs promote healthful choices for children and better educate them and their parents about nutritious offerings in restaurants. More than 145 restaurant brands in more than 42,000 locations nationwide participate in the program. The NRA created the program with nutrition consultant Healthy Dining.

“The California Milk Advisory Board’s partnership offers new opportunities to promote the role low-fat dairy plays in healthful meals for children,” said Joan McGlockton, the NRA’s vice president of industry affairs and food policy. “This will help Kids LiveWell restaurants identify low-fat dairy options and the nutrients these options provide for our youngest customers.”

Milk board spokeswoman Jennifer Giambroni said teaching children about including the benefits of milk and dairy products is essential to helping them develop good eating habits.

“We’re pleased to be a part of a program that promotes nutritious and wholesome restaurant meals for children,” she said.
