DOL announces more wage-and-hour crackdowns

The Department of Labor last month announced new wage-and-hour enforcement initiatives targeting restaurants in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., following agency crackdowns on restaurants in other parts of the country last year. Read more about the DOL's plans in Los Angeles and Portland.

The agency has stepped up its overall enforcement of minimum-wage and teen labor laws. The DOL's Wage and Hour Division collected a record-high $225 million in back wages last fiscal year. Restaurants accounted for more than 10 percent (about $24 million) of that amount, according to a DOL spokesperson. The restaurant-industry violations involved more than 46,000 employees in about 5,000 restaurants, the agency spokesperson said.

Other federal agencies appear to be stepping up enforcement as well. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last fiscal year collected a record $455.6 million for plaintiffs who allege discrimination; nearly 100,000 private-sector discrimination claims were filed in FY 2011, also a record.
