Diversity increases in restaurant leadership

Restaurant owners and executives are becoming increasingly diverse, according to new National Restaurant Association research.

Nearly 50 percent of restaurants are owned by women, and Hispanic restaurant ownership has increased 42 percent in the past five years, the research shows. Furthermore, restaurants employ more minority managers than any other industry.

“The restaurant industry provides opportunity for millions of people from all backgrounds,” says Scott DeFife, the NRA's executive vice president for policy and government affairs. “More women and people from diverse backgrounds are becoming restaurant entrepreneurs or are pursuing lifelong, successful careers in the industry.”

Almost half of all Americans have worked in the restaurant industry, and more than one in four adults say their first job was in a restaurant. Eighty percent of restaurant managers began their careers as front-line employees.

The Association is using such data to promote the industry's impact on the U.S. economy and culture through “America Works Here,” a year-long advertising campaign to tell the restaurant industry’s story.

The first ad, launched in January, highlights the 13 million jobs created by restaurants, and the more than $1.7 trillion the industry added to the economy.

Restaurants are primarily small businesses − 93 percent have fewer than 50 employees. American restaurants' profit margin averages 3 percent to 4 percent.
