FDA extends comments deadline on artificial trans-fat decision

The Federal Drug Administration said it will extend by 60 days the comment period on its preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils, the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not “generally recognized as safe” for use in foods.

The FDA is granting an extension to March 8, 2014, because of the large number of stakeholder requests for speaking time.

The National Restaurant Association recently conducted a survey of industry professionals to determine how the FDA’s preliminary decision to ban PHOs, would affect how the foodservice industry conducts business.

For those interested in submitting comments electronically to the FDA docket on http://www.regulations.gov, use docket number FDA-2013-N-1317.

To submit comments by mail, send to FDA at: Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Rm. 1061, Rockville, MD 20852. All submissions must include the agency name and docket number.

The original notice in the Federal Register announcing the FDA’s preliminary determination appeared Nov. 8 and stated that the period for providing comments and scientific data pertaining to the preliminary determination on PHOs would end Jan. 7.
