Guide offers tips on safe handling of food at food banks

The National Restaurant Association and anti-hunger organization Feeding America have teamed up to produce a customized food-handling education program that teaches food-bank and other charitable-group workers how to distribute food safely and properly.

The guide, called the “ServSafe Food Handler Guide for Food Banking,” will help Feeding America’s 200 food banks and more than 60,000 contributing agencies better understand food-safety techniques and practices.

“Through its extensive network of food banks and legions of volunteers, Feeding America is fighting to end hunger in communities across our country,” said Dawn Sweeney, the NRA’s president and CEO. “Proper food safety and handling is paramount when serving food to others, and we are pleased to help provide that training through our ServSafe program.”

The co-branded guide focuses on:

  • the importance of food safety
  • maintaining good personal hygiene
  • cleaning and sanitizing food properly
  • how to receive, store, evaluate, repack and transport food safely

The NRA’s ServSafe team worked with Feeding America to survey operators in the Feeding America network, conduct focus groups with more than 20 food banks, and tour network agencies to better understand the organization’s operations and needs.

“We are thankful to the National Restaurant Association for teaming with us to create these important new training materials,” said Bob Aiken, Feeding America’s CEO. “Food safety is core to our operations and we are delighted that the Association has shared their years of experience and expertise with us.”

To date, more than 5 million foodservice professionals have been certified through the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination. To find out more about the ServSafe program, go here.
