Kudos on Perdue as Ag Secretary; others move forward

The National Restaurant Association congratulated the Senate on confirming former Georgia Governor George “Sonny” Perdue as our next Secretary of Agriculture.

Cicely Simpson, our executive vice president of government affairs and policy, applauded the April 24th confirmation of Gov. Perdue, saying his proven track record of public service and commitment would not only help farmers, but also the foodservice industry, which relies heavily on agriculture for the food it grows and produces.

“Our industry depends on the agricultural community to supply restaurants and we look forward to working with Governor Perdue in the future,” she said.

Perdue, who served as Georgia’s Governor from 2003 to 2011, will oversee the country’s food and farm programs while managing the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is staffed by more than 100,000 employees. He also is expected to work with Congress on a new, five-year farm bill that could require new policy to help rural businesses and address issues, such as agricultural subsidies, food safety, nutrition, and conservation efforts.

Following the Senate’s confirmation of Perdue, its Finance Committee unanimously approved Robert Lighthizer’s nomination as U.S. trade representative. Next up is a full vote for confirmation in about two weeks.

Besides Perdue and Lighthizer, two others still await Senate confirmation. They are Dr. Scott Gottlieb, tapped by President Trump to oversee the Food and Drug Administration, and R. Alexander Acosta, who was chosen to head up the Department of Labor after Andrew Puzder, former CEO of CKE Restaurants, withdrew his nomination.

Gottlieb is expected to be confirmed April 26 and Acosta on April 27.
