Vegas restaurants offer help after shooting

The Las Vegas restaurant community came out in full force this week to provide food and support to victims, their family members and first responders involved in the shooting at a country music concert Oct. 1.

The restaurateurs organized the effort via social media. They arranged to bring food to those aiding the victims and to friends and family members waiting for word on the conditions of their relatives and loved ones who were shot at the concert. According to published reports, the gunman, Stephen Paddock, 64, killed 59 people and injured 520 others.

Sparrow & Wolf’s Justin Hall was one of the earliest to put out the call, beginning a grass-roots campaign to connect chefs with people who could use their help. … As the day progressed, other members of the local dining community joined in.

Dawn Sweeney, our president and CEO, offered her condolences to the shooting victims. She also commended the Las Vegas restaurant industry for help out in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“We extend our prayers and thoughts to the victims and families affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas,” she said. “Our community stands with our colleagues and friends at the Las Vegas restaurants and hotels affected by this horrific incident.”

Restaurants, including Sparrow & Wolf, Bouchon Bakery, pizzerias Metro Pizza ‑‑ owned by our board member Sam Facchini – Evel Pie and Naked City Pizza, as well as Fatburger, Jesse Rae’s BBQ and Yardbird, were among the establishments delivering food to blood banks, the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Valley Hospital Medical Center. Plans to send food trucks and meals to University Medical Center also were made.

The restaurateurs said they plan to continue providing food and snacks until the need no longer exists.
