Louisiana restaurants donate gift cards to flood victims

The Louisiana restaurant community, no stranger to dealing with hurricane damage, is reaching out to assist restaurateurs in Texas as they battle the impact of Hurricane Harvey.

While Harvey is no longer a hurricane, flooding from the tropical storm continues to affect restaurants and residents in Houston. To help, operators in neighboring Louisiana and their customers are donating gift cards to support the Texas restaurant community as it begins repairing water-damaged businesses and homes.

According to the Louisiana Restaurant Association, Amy Sins, chef-owner of Langlois Culinary Crossroads in New Orleans, is spearheading the weeklong drive to collect gift cards to such stores as Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Target and various gas stations to help industry employees impacted by the storm.

Restaurant drop-off locations in the New Orleans area include Cavan, Sylvain, Barrel Proof NOLA, Meauxbar, Palace Café, Arnaud’s & the French 75 Bar, Pizza Nola, and St. James Cheese Company.

Anyone interested in donating gift cards should drop them off at those locations throughout the week. This week is significant for another reason, too. Aug. 29 was the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Sins said she and her fellow restaurateurs couldn’t think of a better way to say thank you to Houston for its help all those years ago than to return the favor now.

“After Katrina hit, Houston really stepped up and helped us out big,” she said. “This is our way of returning the hospitality we received from them.”
