Redemption through restaurants: a James Beard winner's turnaround story


Coastal Style magazine recently profiled James Beard Award winner and Delaware restaurateur Matt Haley's turnaround "From a Dark Past to a Brilliant Spotlight." Haley, a 20-year restaurant industry veteran, discusses his philanthropic work, his troubled youth and his accomplishments.

Here are eight things the article reveals about Haley:

$7: His starting wage for his first job in the restaurant industry in 1995. He washed dishes, cut vegetables — and found his calling.

3: The number of years between that job and the opening of Haley's first restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland.

27: The number of dinners his first restaurant in Delaware served on opening night in 2001.

8: How many restaurants Haley owns today.
