Redemption through restaurants: a James Beard winner's turnaround story

Coastal Style magazine recently profiled James Beard Award winner and Delaware restaurateur Matt Haley's turnaround "From a Dark Past to a Brilliant Spotlight." Haley, a 20-year restaurant industry veteran, discusses his philanthropic work, his troubled youth and his accomplishments.

Here are eight things the article reveals about Haley:

$7: His starting wage for his first job in the restaurant industry in 1995. He washed dishes, cut vegetables — and found his calling.

3: The number of years between that job and the opening of Haley's first restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland.

27: The number of dinners his first restaurant in Delaware served on opening night in 2001.

8: How many restaurants Haley owns today.

3: How many awards Haley has received this year for his philanthropic work: the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's Cornerstone Humanitarian and the International Association of Culinary Professional's National Humanitarian of the Year.

30: The number of Haley's speaking engagements in the three months between the announcement of the James Beard award and the awards gala.

$250,000: The amount Haley's Global Delaware Fund has raised to support non-profit and charitable organizations in the state.

$8,500: The cost to sponsor a child's education in Nepal, where Haley has funded two schools, an orphanage renovation and other projects.
