NM Supreme Court orders minimum wage question on ballot

After a lot of legal wrangling, New Mexico's high court ruled that a minimum-wage increase can go on Albuquerque's ballot Nov. 6.

The referendum asks Albuquerque voters to approve a plan to increase the city's minimum wage to $8.50 from $7.50, increase the minimum cash wage for tipped employees to 60 percent of the minimum wage (from $2.13 an hour), and automatically tie future wage hikes to the rate of inflation.

A New Mexico district court said the measure combined too many issues into a single ballot question. But the Supreme Court reversed that decision Sept. 12. The wage petition was circulated by wage-hike activists this summer.

The New Mexico Restaurant Association is a leader in the "Safeguard Albuquerque's Fragile Economy" (SAFE) coalition of businesses opposed to the increase. The coalition represents thousands of small businesses ranging from grocers to retailers, gas stations, hoteliers and innkeepers.
