NRA CEO at President's Apprenticeship Task Force meeting

Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association, kicked off National Apprenticeship Week by attending the White House’s first meeting of the Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion.

U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta hosted the meeting, held Nov. 13.

Order of the day: Formed following the President’s Executive Order this summer, the task force is seeking solutions to address and improve the skills gap our nation is facing. Part of its mission will be to identify strategies and proposals promoting apprenticeships around the country.


Our role in advancing apprenticeships: The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation is spearheading our new hospitality apprenticeship program, a joint effort with the American Hotel & Lodging Association, funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Department of Labor.

Why it’s important: Our initiative, the nation’s first Hospitality Sector Registered Apprenticeship (HSRA) program, offers individuals interested in foodservice and hospitality industry careers to earn while they learn – through hands-on training and classroom education.

The latest dish: So far, restaurant and hotel companies have committed to registering 484 apprentices through our program, and the Department of Labor has renewed its contract to fund the program for 2018.
