New NRA training course to address food allergies

Restaurant operators have a new online training program to help them address food allergens. The ServSafe Allergens Online Course is designed to help front- and back-of-the-house employees better accommodate the growing number of guests with food allergies.

Food allergies are potentially life-threatening and affecting about 15 million Americans, said John Lehr, CEO of the non-profit Food Allergy Research & Education.

ServSafe Allergens will help restaurant personnel better understand safety precautions and guests' needs related to food allergens, he said. Ultimately, it will help ensure a safe, enjoyable dining experience for people with food allergies and their families, he said.

We strongly encourage guests to talk to restaurant staff about their food allergies and discuss concerns and alternatives to make their dining experience safe and enjoyable," said William Weichelt, director, ServSafe, NRA.

The NRA developed ServSafe Allergens with FARE, which it has worked with for years on food allergen training and awareness.

"We are excited to partner with FARE to educate our restaurants and their employees and help our members accommodate their guests' food allergies or other dietary requirements," Weichelt said.

The course is part of the NRA's suite of  ServSafe training and certification programs. More than 5 million people have received certification through the ServSafe Food Safety program.
