ProStart Project Taste Test program debuts

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation has launched Project Taste Test – Servin’ up Successful Careers, a new initiative that showcases career opportunities in the foodservice sector.

The initiative, created in partnership with PepsiCo Foodservice, is an ongoing video series that features industry executives advising ProStart program students who are seeking careers in foodservice. The first video features Stephen Kalil, PepsiCo’s corporate executive research chef. Other videos will debut throughout the school year.

“We are thrilled to offer this first video and ignite excitement in our next generation of foodservice professionals,” said Rob Gifford, the NRAEF’s executive vice president of philanthropic initiatives. "The experts featured in this video series bring a passion to the industry that truly shines through, and we at the NRAEF are eager to share their success stories with our students across the country."

In the first video, chef Kalil talks about developing and launching new products. He also discusses what he loves about his career and offers tips to students who are looking to create similar career paths in the industry. He advises them to always “ask and keep asking; learn and keep learning.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to be part of the inaugural video of the Project Taste Test initiative,” said Stephen Kalil, corporate executive research chef, PepsiCo. “The NRAEF has been diligent in its mission to enhance the stature of the restaurant industry and these videos will serve as another avenue to excite students about a long-term and upwardly mobile career in foodservice that helps them pursue their dreams and develop as professionals.”

The ProStart program, created by the NRAEF in partnership with the restaurant industry, is administered and managed by 48 participating state restaurant associations around the United States, as well as programs in Guam and Department of Defense high schools on U.S. military bases. It helps introduce students to career opportunities in restaurants and features a specialized curriculum – Foundations of Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts – that was developed with the help of industry professionals. The program has given some 95,000 students a platform to nurture their industry interests and talents, and open doors to foodservice careers.

In addition to the videos, which spotlight a day in the life of some of the industry’s most renowned professionals, the Project Taste Test program also will consist of in-classroom discussion and activity guides that highlight the unlimited opportunities available to students pursuing careers in foodservice.
