ProStart to be taught in Pennsylvania, NRAEF says

Pennsylvania is the newest state to join the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s ProStart initiative, a two-year program that provides high-school students around the country with a platform to build their talents and interests into careers in the foodservice industry.

It is the 48th state to join ProStart, which teaches students culinary techniques and management skills within an industry-driven curriculum.

“ProStart has experienced phenomenal, consistent growth over the past several years,” said Rob Gifford, executive vice president of philanthropic initiatives for the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. “With 48 states now part of the ProStart program, this is an incredible testament to the strength of the program and our ProStart educators.”

The Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association will support and implement the state’s ProStart program.

“We understand the value and importance of programs like ProStart in preparing students for careers in the restaurant industry and are thrilled to become the latest state to implement the curriculum,” said John Doulgeris, the PRLA’s chief operating officer said. “We look forward to partnering with the NRAEF and supporting its mission to ensure the future of the restaurant industry has a highly-trained and professional talent pool.”

As part of the program, students who complete its requirements are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement, an industry-recognized certificate. To earn the certificate, students pass two national exams, demonstrate a mastery of foundational skills and work 400 mentored hours. Those who receive the certificate are eligible for NRAEF scholarship opportunities and course credits at more than 75 of the country’s leading hospitality and culinary arts colleges and universities.

Students also can compete in the National ProStart Invitational, the country’s premier high-school competition focusing on restaurant management and the culinary arts.

Schools in Pennsylvania participating in the ProStart program this school year include:
• Monroe Career & Technical Institute, Bartonsville
• Crawford County Career Technical Center, Meadville
• Fayette County Career & Technology Institute, Uniontown
• Lebanon County Career & Technology Center, Lebanon

NRAEF research indicates that more than four in five students who complete the ProStart program are still studying and/or working in the industry five years later.

Over the next 10 years, total restaurant and foodservice employment is projected to grow by 11 percent. The NRAEF, through its ProStart program and education scholarships, is working to help ensure the development of a highly trained and professional talent pool.

The ProStart curriculum currently is taught in more than 1,900 schools. For more information on the program, visit NRAEF.org/ProStart or Twitter or Facebook.
