Restaurant exec: Continued inaction on immigration reform harmful

Restaurateurs are standing up for immigration reform.

Joe Essa, president of Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, writes in Roll Call that the U.S. immigration system is “outdated, ill-functioning, and wholly inadequate to deal with the needs of U.S. business competing in a global economy.”

“[R]estaurants are the country’s leading employer of entry-level employees,” Essa wrote. “We’re the gateway for economic integration — a stepping stone to higher-paying jobs both in our own industry as well as others.” He said restaurants are expected to add more than 1 million new jobs over the next 10 years, and that immigrants should have a chance at these opportunities.

The National Restaurant Association supports immigration reform that provides a clear path to legalization for America’s 11 million undocumented workers, an accurate and reliable national employment verification system, and secure U.S. borders that promote legitimate travel and tourism.

Tell Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
