Rhode Island governor signs minimum wage increase

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) today signed off on a measure that will increase the state's minimum wage to $7.75 per hour as of Jan. 1, 2013, up from $7.40.

Rhode Island is the only state to enact a minimum wage increase so far this year. The final measure signed by Chafee represents a significantly scaled-back version of the original proposal, which called for automatic annual increases in the minimum wage (tied to inflation), and an increase in the minimum cash wage for tipped employees.

Although many state legislatures have concluded their 2012 sessions, some states are still debating wage increases. And in Missouri, wage-hike proponents are trying to put a minimum-wage increase on the November ballot. That effort is being challenged in court by the Missouri Restaurant Association. Also, the state has not yet verified that proponents submitted enough valid signatures to put the measure to voters.
