SOS plates up annual Dine Out to end kid hunger

dineout.gifShare Our Strength, which aims to end childhood hunger in America, will hold its annual Dine Out for No Kid Hungry national campaign Sept. 16 through 22.

The Dine Out, through the support of participating restaurants, their staff members and customers, raises funds through culinary events that support SOS' imperative to eradicate childhood hunger by 2015. This year SOS said it is planning to partner with approximately 10,000 restaurants and raise $5 million that will help provide kids around the country with better access to programs such as:

School breakfast.
Summer, afterschool, weekend and preschool programs that offer healthful snacks or meals.
SNAP (food stamps), WIC (Women, Infants and Children Assistance), and emergency food assistance, including food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters).
Skills-based nutrition education.

"The restaurant industry is committed to fighting hunger and improving the well-being of our nation's children," said Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association, a long-time champion of SOS and the Dine Out for No Kid Hungry campaign. "We are very pleased to support this organization in its mission to ensure that children in need receive better access to food, nutrition and education."

The NRA in April announced its commitment to help SOS triple the amount of funds raised during the Dine Out for No Kid Hungry campaign through 2013. According to SOS, since the group's inception in 1984, restaurants and their chefs have helped it raise nearly $100 million to fight childhood hunger. In 2011 alone, more than 5,500 restaurants raised nearly $2.4 million.
