Same-store sales continue to rise

Fast casual operators reported positive same-store sales for the 29th consecutive month in January, according to the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Industry Tracking Survey.

Fifty-three percent of fast casual operators reported a same-store sales gain between January 2012 and January 2013, while 31 percent reported a same-store sales decline.  In December, 48 percent of fast casual operators reported higher same-store sales, which represented the softest results since August 2011.

Fast casual operators remain generally optimistic that sales levels will improve in the coming months.  Fifty-one percent of fast casual operators expect to have higher sales in six months (compared to the same period in the previous year), while only 10 percent expect their sales volume in six months to be lower than it was during the same period in the previous year.

However, fast casual operators are much less bullish about the direction of the overall economy.  Only 29 percent of fast casual operators expect overall economic conditions to improve in six months, while 24 percent expect economic conditions to worsen in the next six months.
