Texas restaurateur: ‘Nutrition is part of our family heritage’

As the father of twin boys, Nick Anthony knows first-hand the challenges parents face when dining out.

Like many parents, the founder of Papouli's Greek Grill seeks healthful food choices for his children, so he says he was delighted to become part of the National Restaurant Association's Kids LiveWell initiative. He'd previously removed sodas and French fries from the kids' menu at his four locations.

"Nutrition is part of our family heritage," Anthony explains. "As my grandfather did when he opened his restaurant here 100 years ago, we are committed to sharing the clean and robust flavors of the Mediterranean."

The Kids LiveWell initiative resonated with Anthony, who offers two approved choices: beef or chicken on a stick with a tropical fruit cup and water. He thought the term "on a stick" would appeal more to kids than "shish kebab" or "skewers."

"The response has been much better than expected," he says. "Parents seem to get it. Interestingly, our volume of apples and carrots has shot up significantly, with parents ordering these items, too!"

San Antonio-Texas-based Papouli's promotes Kids LiveWell through social media, its blog and advertising in a weekly newspaper.
