More Time for Full Time Statement on Restoring the Traditional Workweek under ACA

(Washington, D.C.) The More Time for Full Time initiative which represents hundreds of thousands of employers and tens of millions of employees issued the following statement regarding Sen. McConnell and Speaker Boehner’s comments on restoring the definition of a traditional work week under the Affordable Care Act:

“The More Time for Full Time initiative thanks Sen. McConnell and Speaker Boehner for their renewed focus on restoring the definition of full-time employment back to the traditional 40-hour work week. As it stands, the 30-hour definition under the current health care law hurts employers and employees by forcing employers to restructure their workforce and reduce their employees’ hours. Fixing the definition, which has bi-partisan support, will lift the burden placed on employers, and help them get back to creating jobs in their communities and growing their businesses. We look forward to working with Congress to push meaningful legislation forward.”

The initiative, which includes the National Restaurant Association, the International Franchise Association, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the National Retail Federation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Rental Association, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, the National Association of Convenience Stores, the National Grocers Association, National Association of Theatre Owners, and the Society for Human Resource Management highlights the negative impact the 30-hour work week definition in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has on employees and employers.

About Us:

Associations representing millions of employers from across the country – across a variety of industries from retail and restaurants to grocery and hotels – are behind the More Time for Full Time coalition. This initiative has come together because employees in these industries are being squeezed by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s (ACA or Obamacare) 30-hours-per-week definition of full-time employee.

Founded in 1919, the National Restaurant Association is the leading business association for the restaurant industry, which comprises more than 1 million restaurant and foodservice outlets and a workforce of 14.7 million employees. We represent the industry in Washington, D.C., and advocate on its behalf. We operate the industry's largest trade show (NRA Show May 20-23, 2017, in Chicago); leading food safety training and certification program (ServSafe); unique career-building high school program (the NRA Educational Foundation's ProStart); as well as the Kids LiveWell program promoting healthful kids' menu options.
