Cornerstone Humanitarian Nominee: Allan Beetle and Small Business Winner Patrick’s Pub coowner Allan Beetle was frustrated by his community’s lack of safe places to ride bicycles with his two young children. So in 2002, Beetle helped create a group to raise money to build the multi-use WOW Trail, named for three lakes it will pass when completed. The restaurant caters a major fundraising dinner — the WOW Sweepstakes Ball — which has raised more than $125,000 over the past five years. Each year, Patrick’s serves dinner at cost for 500 people, with staff and managers volunteering their time in event planning, tickets sales and set-up. In addition, Patrick’s has donated more than $2,500 in goods and services for the organization’s annual auction. With funds raised and matching federal grants for the project, the community is on its way to reaching the $3 million needed to build the 10-mile trail.
