Pigs and barbecue go hand-in-hand, making Memphis Championship Barbecue’s When Pigs Fly fundraiser a perfect fit. The lighthearted campaign is for a serious cause — helping Opportunity Village, a nonprofit organization that serves people with developmental disabilities through vocational training, advocacy and social recreation. During National Barbecue Month in May and through mid-June, staff offer each customer the chance to purchase a “flying pig” for $2. This year’s program — the first for Memphis Championship Barbecue — raised $8,500 for Opportunity Village. During the organization’s telethon in June, the restaurant fed the 325 Opportunity Village volunteers and anyone else who came in to donate $30 for the telethon. With Memphis Championship Barbecue’s support, Opportunity Village raised nearly $30,000.
