How to Handle Product Recalls

If you learn about a food manufacturer that has recalled one of its products, what should your next step be?

What should you do first?
Before taking any other action, learn the reason for the recall and whether your items are among those being recalled. Companies recall products for a range of reasons, everything from bacteria contamination to inaccurate ingredient labeling.

To get the details about meat-and-poultry recalls, access the "Recall Information Center" set up by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety & Inspection Service or call the USDA's Meat and Poultry Hotline at (800) 535-4555.

To learn about other food recalls, visit the Food and Drug Administration's Web site at www.fda.gov for the latest recall information or call (202) 205-4187.

How should the recall proceed?
Identify and segregate the recalled items. If your lot number is among those recalled and you deem it unsafe to use the product, separate it from your other items.

What should you do with recalled items? Discard or return the items. Contact the manufacturer to inquire whether you should return recalled items or discard them. Be sure to ask how you can get a refund.
