Summary A cash wage/tipped employees bill has been introduced in the House by Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD). H.R. 2570, the Working for Adequate Gains for Employment in Services Act or `WAGES Act' would effectively double the cash wage for tipped employees by 2012.
The WAGES Act would amend Sec. 3(m)(1) of the Fair Labor Standards Act to provide that tipped employees be paid no less than $3.75 an hour, effective 90 dates from the bill's enactment, at least $5.00 an hour beginning July 1, 2011, and as of July 1, 2012, the minimum wage for a tipped employee would be 70 percent of the standard minimum wage in effect under Sec. 6(a)(1) or $5.50 an hour, whichever is greater.
The NRA will be closely monitoring this legislation, but it does not appear to be on the priority list for Congress at this point.
