Easy-on-the-wallet activities see consumer spending spike

Budget-friendly indoor entertainment gained popularity among consumers in the third quarter of 2011, new data from National Restaurant Association partner American Express Business Insights suggests.

Consumer spending on billiards, aquariums, bowling and other indoor pursuits rose 8.9 percent from the same period a year ago, according to the Q3 2011 Business Insights Spend Sights report. However, spending for outdoor entertainment and dining decreased compared to the third quarter of 2010.

In the dining sector, consumers decreased spending for casual dining 8.2 percent fine dining, 5.5 percent; and quickservice, 1.3 percent. The data suggests mid-tier dining establishments were most affected by consumers' preferences for either value or luxury.

Based on actual, aggregated spending data between July 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2011, the reports give a year-over-year comparison of consumer and business spending for luxury retail items, dining and entertainment and travel.
