Director of Media Relations Communications


Summary of Position
Implements and oversees promotion of the National Restaurant Association, its key programs, policies and initiatives, as well as the restaurant and foodservice industry as a whole to media outlets and industry stakeholders.
Principle Duties
  • Work as part of the Communications team to accomplish Association goals
  • Assist the Vice President of Communications and Media Relations and Vice President of Advocacy Communications to accomplish departmental goals
  • Play a key role in determining and achieving metrics related to the reputation of the industry and Association included in the Association’s Dashboard
  • Support all internal team members and departments following the Association mission and values while promoting Association culture
  • Develop and implement strategies to reach Association’s media relations goals
  • Coordinate industry reputational efforts, including earned and paid media strategies, grassroots activities and research initiatives. Serve as liaison with outside consultants
  • Pitch news stories of Association work, programs, products and events; produces press releases and other materials to engage media
  • Coordinate media interviews and statements articulating the Association's position on legislative and regulatory matters, as well as industry-related products and programs, including research reports 
  • Serve as a spokesperson to promote the National Restaurant Association, its functions and its contribution to the foodservice industry; serves as a spokesperson to promote the overall industry
  • Oversee and track a large volume of media inquiries on industry trends and pending regulatory and legislative issues impacting the industry, and coordinates rapid response on breaking news
  • Provide media relations support to state associations and members, and regularly communicates with these audiences on issues affecting the industry
  • Manage promotion and media relations for Association media events
  • Prepare Association staff and board members for media interviews. Research facts on the relevant issues, outlines strategy and role-plays the interview situation
  • Other duties as assigned 
Secondary Duties
  • Work on special projects and other duties as required helping to promote department’s success.
Position Specifications
1. Essential Use of Following Tools:

  • Social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.)
2. Essential Training/Certifications
  • BA or BS with emphasis on language and journalism or relevant work experience
  • Job related experience: background in communications, journalism and public relations; Capitol Hill or political campaign experience preferred
3. Essential Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong writing, reading and math skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Computer literate (Excellent knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint applications)
  • Ability to learn other computer software programs, and enter and maintain accurate data/information
  • Broad fundamental communications and media relations knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of office equipment 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of work records
  • Strong organizational skills
