2nd bill introduced to repeal employer health-care mandate

A bipartisan group of U.S. House members May 5 introduced a bill to repeal the employer mandate in the 2010 health care law.

H.R. 1744, by Reps. Charles Boustany (R-La.), Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio) and John Barrow (D-Ga.), would repeal the law's requirement that employers with more than 50 full-time-equivalent employees offer full-time employees affordable health benefits by 2014 or pay stiff penalties.


The National Restaurant Association strongly supports H.R. 1744, the American Job Protection Act. The same bill is pending in the Senate. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is the lead sponsor of S. 20, which has picked up 26 cosponsors since January.

The nation’s nearly 1 million restaurants are alarmed by the high costs, regulatory complexity and unanswered questions surrounding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act -- not just in 2014, when the law’s most onerous mandates for employers take effect, but now, as businesses reexamine growth and hiring decisions in light of PPACA’s risks.

Because of the law’s impact on the restaurant industry, the NRA has worked to provide constructive input as the regulations are shaped. But there are limits to the scope of change that can be achieved through regulation, so the NRA believes significant legislative changes must be made -- including eliminating the employer mandate and its associated triggers and penalties.
