Beard House, Vermilion restaurant to hold cook-off

The National Restaurant Association has partnered with the James Beard Foundation and Vermilion restaurant in New York City to promote the Women in Culinary Leadership Cook-Off, which will be held next month.

Created as part of the James Beard Foundation Vermilion Women in Culinary Leadership Program and designed to raise awareness and promote opportunities for female leaders in the culinary industry, the contest is searching for driven female chefs and restaurateurs looking to develop their leadership and culinary skills.

Eight finalists will travel to New York to compete in the cook-off, where they will prepare a signature Indian-Latin-inspired dish for an esteemed panel of judges. Two grand-prize winners will receive a one-year internship at the upscale Indian-Latin-themed Vermilion restaurant.

As part of the internship, the two winners will be mentored in leadership by Rohni Dey, Vermilion's owner-operator. In addition, they will get a weekly $500 grant from the Women in Culinary Leadership Scholarship as well as a one-week internship at the James Beard House. At the Beard House, they will have an opportunity to work with several participating celebrity chefs, including Michelle Bernstein, Lorena Garcia, Sue Torrez and Susan Weaver.

Prospective contestants must submit a resume, essay and a recipe for one contemporary Indian-Latin dish through Vermilion's online entry form by Jan. 14. For more information, visit www.thevermilionrestaurant.com/wicl.
