Beverage ban group still adding NYC members

The coalition fighting New York City's recently passed beverage ban said it continues to gain momentum with the public and has increased its membership to more than 400,000 people.

New Yorkers for Beverage Choices said it recently added more than 100,000 new members who oppose the ban passed Sept. 13 by the city's Board of Health. It is expected to be enacted in March 2013. The ban will prohibit restaurants, delis, stadiums and arenas, concession stands and food carts from selling sugar-sweetened beverages in containers above 16 ounces.

Banned beverages include soda, sweetened iced tea, some smoothies and coffee drinks and lemonade.

The coalition, of which the National Restaurant Association is a member, said it would continue to fight for small business owners and New Yorkers that oppose the ban, and that it would not abandon those efforts.

"This restriction on choice has passed, but not with the support of New Yorkers," spokesman Eliot Hoff said. "We are still looking into every option to ensure this ban does not go into effect in March."
