California’s Sardine Factory toasts 50th anniversary

The Sardine Factory, one of Monterey, California’s renowned upscale restaurants, recently celebrated 50 years in business.

National Restaurant Association board member and former chair Ted Balestreri and business partner Bert Cutino founded the restaurant in 1968. Since its inception, it’s been known for great service, local and sustainable food, and expansive wine list. The restaurant has been a favorite of celebrities and celebrity chefs alike, including Clint Eastwood, Tony Bennett, Ray Romano, Julia Child and Rachael Ray.

In celebration of the restaurant’s 50th anniversary, the Court of Master Sommeliers, premier international examining body for the beverage service industry, presented Balestreri and Cutino with a ceremonial saber, signaling the Sardine Factory’s wine service excellence. The restaurant has been a supporter of the organization’s growth for years. It held the inaugural Master Sommelier Diploma Examination there in 1987. The Court’s President Emeritus, Fred Dame, thanked the two restaurateurs, citing the Sardine Factory’s generous support and promotion of excellence in wine and service.

“Their vision and support for quality excellence is an inspiration to all in the industry,” he said.

The Sardine Factory, located in Monterey’s famed Cannery Row district, has received several culinary and beverage awards in its 50-year history, including Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRoNA) Award, the Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence and Grand Award and Restaurant Hospitality's Best Wine List in America.
