Commentary: Federal regulations threaten business growth

With businesses already struggling under the weight of increased health care costs and the threat of overtime rules expansion, a minimum wage hike could limit the ability of restaurants and other employers to hire more workers, NRA Chair of the Board Ken Conrad wrote in a Roll Call op-ed.

Conrad, chairman of Libby Hill Seafood Restaurants, wrote that the current political and economic environment is the most challenging he’s seen in his 40 years in the restaurant industry. Mandatory wage hikes and other policies aimed at lifting up low-income workers often have the opposite effect by stifling growth, and limiting opportunities for advancement, Conrad wrote.

“Tackling income inequality should not be addressed by an either-or approach,” Conrad wrote. “We can — and have — had it both ways. What we need is a comprehensive, multi-faceted solution that provides more education, training and lifts people into the middle class in a way that also encourages business growth.
