Conserve sustainability program to debut in Canada this fall

The National Restaurant Association has teamed up with the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association to launch a Canadian version of the NRA's Conserve Sustainability Education ProgramSM there later this year.

The initiative will provide Canadian restaurant and foodservice establishments with tools and information that will help them implement sustainable business practices at their various operations and become more environmentally friendly.

The program, which focuses on ways to reduce energy, waste and water usage, will debut across Canada in the fall. It will consist of an online presence featuring educational materials, such as videos and case studies that are similar to the content that appears in the U.S. version of Conserve, but customized for the Canadian market.

"We are so pleased to begin this partnership with our friends in the Canadian restaurant and foodservice industry," said Dawn Sweeney, the NRA's president and CEO. She added that the association "launched the Conserve initiative to raise awareness and provide resources to every U.S. restaurant operator regardless of size, and it has been exciting to see how [it] has grown in just a few short years."

The NRA developed and rolled out the Conserve program in 2009 in order to initiate and inspire environmentally friendly actions at restaurant operations while also improving those companies' bottom lines.

Garth Whyte, the CRFA's president and CEO, said offering the Conserve program would be an important resource to operators throughout Canada.

"Environmental sustainability is a growing area of interest for our members and their customers. We look forward to leveraging Conserve's best practices and lessons into a uniquely Canadian program that will help our members reduce their environmental footprint, as well as saving them time and money," he said.
