DHS expands E-Verify Self Check program to 21 states and D.C.

Employees in 21 states and Washington, D.C., can now check their eligibility to work in the United States via "E-Verify Self Check," a service of the Department of Homeland Security.

The self-check system is aimed at helping employees clean up discrepancies in their employment-eligibility information before they are hired by an employer who participates in the DHS's E-Verify program.

The DHS's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced last month that E-Verify Self Check service is now available in Spanish and has expanded to residents of California, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Washington. That builds on this spring's initial launch of Self Check for residents of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Self Check is the first online service offered directly to U.S. workers by E-Verify, a DHS program administered by USCIS in partnership with the Social Security Administration. Employers can use the Internet-based E-Verify service to determine employees’ eligibility to work in the United States through information reported in the employee's Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification).

When employees over the age of 16 use Self Check to confirm their eligibility to work in the United States, they enter the same information that employers would enter into E-Verify. Self Check allows users to compare their information to the same databases that E-Verify accesses, giving them an opportunity to address any existing data mismatches before they are hired by an E-Verify-participating employer.

USCIS says it intends to expand the Self Check service nationwide by next spring.
