DVD gets kudos for ‘smart’ take on social media

The National Restaurant Association recently received a Bronze award at the 35th Annual Telly Awards for “Being Social Media Smart”, a DVD that teaches restaurateurs how to use social media responsibly.

As social media makes private information public, the DVD gives restaurateurs tips on how to teach employees to be responsible when representing themselves and their employers on social-media platforms.

“Being Social Media Smart” was released earlier this year as part of a 3-disc series covering tough issues for restaurant operators. The DVD focuses on five areas:

  • being knowledgeable about how public and private networks intersect
  • understanding how one person’s posts affect others
  • protecting company confidentiality
  • learning to identify and avoid sharing dangerous information
  • being respectful and never posting anything about fellow coworkers or the company without permission

Dawn Sweeney, the NRA’s president and CEO, says she’s pleased the NRA was recognized for helping restaurateurs and their employees use social media intelligently and advantageously.

“Congratulations to our team members for their outstanding work creating an excellent resource for our operators,” she said. “We strive to provide members with the tools they need to operate their businesses successfully, and we are very pleased to be recognized for this effort.”

Linda Day, the Telly Awards’ executive director, said the DVD fulfilled the award program’s mission of honoring the best in film and video.

“The National Restaurant Association’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production,” she said.

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs as well as video and film productions and web commercials videos and films. It receives more than 12,000 entries annually from all 50 states and several foreign countries.
