FPI to honor foodservice packaging innovation

The Foodservice Packaging Institute is encouraging restaurateurs and foodservice packaging manufacturers to participate in its 2013 Foodservice Packaging Awards, a competition honoring packaging innovation.

“We are excited to recognize companies that are going the extra mile to really deliver innovative foodservice packaging …,” said FPI president Lynn Dyer, and “look forward to seeing a variety of new products that are helping to shape the future [of the packaging industry].”

Jeff Clark, program director for the National Restaurant Association’s Conserve sustainability initiative, agreed with Dyer, saying, “Redesigning and retooling any product can be a challenging process, so this competition is a great opportunity to recognize those pioneering companies that truly care about packaging design as a function of environmental and social impact.”

The competition, sponsored by the FPI and QSR magazine, will recognize winners in the following five categories:

• Innovation in Brand Delivery, or use of graphic design elements to create packaging appeal
• Innovation in Convenience, for innovative features that make packaging easier to use or more convenient for the consumer and foodservice workers
• Innovation in Performance, for design innovation that improves product performance
• Innovation in Sustainability, for sustainable innovation in packaging through environmental, economic and/or social impact; and
• The “Wow” Factor, for innovative packaging that best personifies excitement by consumers and operators who use or see the packaging

A Package of the Year award also will be given to one of the five winners from each of the categories. All of the winners will be feted at the FPI’s fall meeting, Oct. 9-10 in Memphis, Tenn.
