Food Service Technology Center celebrates 25th anniversary

The Food Service Technology Center, a scientific education and testing facility for the benchmarking of sustainable, energy efficient equipment in commercial kitchens, celebrated its 25th anniversary this month with a special symposium at its headquarters in San Ramon, Calif.

The symposium, which was held Aug. 1-3, focused on the state of energy-efficient equipment in commercial kitchens and featured presentations by FSTC's founders Don Fisher and Judy Nickel. FSTC staff also presented cutting-edge information about energy-efficient lighting, energy load shifting for ice machines, and the "super-efficient kitchen of the future". More than 200 foodservice industry members, including operators, manufacturers and consultants, attended the event.

FSTC, funded by Pacific Gas & Electric, debuted in August 1987 and today is recognized as a leader in third-party testing of energy-optimized equipment. In 2009, the technology center became an official partner of and advisor to the National Restaurant Association's Conserve Sustainability Education ProgramSM, which offers restaurant operators sustainable, cost-efficient tools and best practices they can implement at their various establishments.

"With its huge data base of information, the Food Service Technology Center has been a great resource for Conserve and restaurant operators around the country," said Chris Moyer, program manager for Conserve. We congratulate them on their 25th anniversary and the contribution they've made to sustainability in our industry."

FSTC officials thanked everyone for attending the symposium, saying it appreciated everyone's support and is looking forward to its next 25 years.
