Our Restaurant Innovation Summit this week was filled with operators, marketers, IT professionals and other "creative scientists." They're ready and exicted to try new things and use data and their instincts to bring their operations to the next level.

We spent a lot of time discussing how to move forward using tech and new ideas, including:

  • How automation and robotics can help our industry.
  • How delivery-only companies are an interesting supplement for dining out -- and viable business model.
  • How chatbots, audio and predictive ordering are things guests want in the fear future -- not a long time off -- as ways to order.

Our TED-like talks on the second day were fascinating, including a discussion of how Newks uses video to train staff and how marketers are bringing in more guests with in-store pop-dinners and other events.

Roy Choi's keynote kickoff was a great way to start the event. Choi discussed authenticity in everything, from working with Jon Favreau on a "Chef" follow-up to social media success and nurturing talent.
