In 2018, prep for 'The Apprentice, part 2'

As we prepare to close out 2017, our Educational Foundation reports the apprentice program it launched earlier this year not only surpassed expectations, but will soon kick off its second year.

The latest info: The program, called the Hospitality Sector Registered Apprenticeship (HSRA), is the industry’s first-ever apprenticeship initiative. It currently has more than 475 committed apprentices who are planning to work at 22 participating restaurant and foodservice companies. Participating companies include Golden Corral, FATZ Café, Firehouse Subs and the Hilton, Wyndham and Hyatt hotel groups.

Read the NRAEF release for the full list of participating companies.

Created in partnership with the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the Department of Labor funded our apprenticeship program with a $1.8 million grant. It will again fund the program in 2018.

Why it’s important: Next year, the goal is to have 1,000 apprentices in the program, who will receive a combination of classroom and hands-on training that enhances their educations and prepares them for rewarding careers at restaurant and foodservice firms. The NRAEF also intends to increase the number of companies participating in the program.

What it means: The National Restaurant Association is committed to supporting apprentices and apprenticeship programs in the restaurant and hospitality industries. In addition to spearheading our own apprenticeship program, Dawn Sweeney, our president and CEO, also serves as a member of the Department of Labor’s Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion.

Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta appointed Sweeney to the taskforce earlier this year. She has been asked to share her workforce development experience in an effort to help close the growing skills gap in the United States.
