Health care, immigration top agenda of legislative meetings

Looking to cool off from the August heat during their summer recess, lawmakers have been visiting with restaurateurs at roundtable meetings across the country.  But with burning issues such as health care, taxes, immigration and the NLRB’s joint-employer standard squeezing the restaurant industry, these meetings have provided anything but a cool escape.

In-district meetings are critical to the success of the restaurant industry. Legislators hear from many different groups and competing interests on a daily basis, and the more members engage them at home and in Washington, the more restaurant issues stay in the front of legislators’ minds.

In Florida, NRA Board Member and Firehouse Subs  CEO Don Fox hosted Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-Fla.) at a newly opened Firehouse Subs location in Jacksonville. Crenshaw met with employees and sat down for lunch and a discussion about the broad challenges facing the growing chain and the restaurant industry.

On the other side of the state, Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) joined NRA Key Advocate and Anna Maria Oyster Bar owner John Horne and 12 other local members who pressed Buchanan on health care and immigration challenges they face.

The Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association organized a roundtable with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden's (D-Ore.) staff on the health care law and the need for the committee to pass stalled legislation to change the health care law’s definition of “full time” from 30 to 40 hours, mirroring what the House passed earlier this year.

The Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association organized a roundtable with Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and several members of his district for a wide ranging discussion of issue. Fitzpatrick sits on the Committee of Financial Services and has been a strong advocate of the industry.
