Is today's apprentice tomorrow's CEO?

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation teamed up with the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Jobs for the Future to create a national apprenticeship program that prepares prospective employees for industry careers.

The U.S. Department of Labor, which is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week Nov. 14 to 20, awarded the NRA and its partners $1.8 million to help fund the program. It will be distributed by the DOL’s ApprenticeshipUSA Initiative, which supports growth of apprenticeship programs in high-growth industries including hospitality, health care, energy, construction, transportation and logistics and manufacturing.

The DOL has the option of renewing the program’s funding for up to five years. We are one of 14 organizations that have been awarded contracts to help expand our industry’s apprenticeship programs nationwide.

Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association and NRAEF, said the restaurant and hospitality sector provide jobs and career opportunities for tens of millions of Americans.

“Our nation’s 1 million restaurants are a place where people can rise from entry-level jobs to managers, executives and even owners,” she said. “By formalizing a registered apprenticeship program focused on management-level positions, we will provide a definitive pathway ‑ through necessary instruction and training ‑ to equip people to advance in hospitality-focused careers.”
