White House taps Sweeney for apprenticeship task force

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the appointment of Dawn Sweeney, our president and CEO, to its Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion.

Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta announced the appointment of Sweeney to the task force, saying he was pleased to see business leaders, educational institutions and industry groups come together to help the American worker.

"The members of the Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion will provide varied perspectives that will help guide the administration's strategy on growing apprenticeship programs nationwide. I am grateful for their participation in this important effort."

She and the other task force members will bring substantial workforce development experience to the table in addressing our nation’s skills gap.

Sweeney is one of 20 influential business leaders named to the task force, led by Secretary Acosta, Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Sweeney said she and the National Restaurant Association look forward to helping create more pathways for career success in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

The DOL last year awarded a $1.8 million grant to our educational foundation that funded our industry's first-ever joint apprenticeship program. The program, created in partnership with the American Hotel & Lodging Association officially launched last February. It aims to develop the next generation of restaurant and hospitality employees into successful managers and executives.

To date, several leading restaurant and hotel companies, including Golden Corral, FATZ Café, Firehouse Subs, Hilton, Wyndham and Hyatt, have committed to registering 482 apprentices from the program.
