Mississippi group wins MarketMaker’s innovation award

A program promoting the purchase and use of local foods at restaurants in Mississippi recently received the National Food MarketMaker's 2012 Innovation Award for Partnership.

The team, which was made up of members of the Mississippi Hospitality & Restaurant Association, the Mississippi State Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and Mississippi State University, was recognized for its "Eat Healthy Mississippi" program, which promotes the purchase and use of local foods by Mississippi restaurateurs. They received the award June 25, at the National Value Added Agricultural Conference in Traverse City, Mass.

"It is our hope that this innovative approach to linking local producers to local restaurants will provide consumers with even more healthy dining options at their favorite restaurants throughout the state," said Mike Cashion, executive director of the Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association.

The award was sponsored by Farm Credit, a national network of borrower-owned lending operations that provides loans, leases, and other financial services to farmers, ranchers, aquatic producers and various agribusinesses.

"Special congratulations to the Mississippi team, who demonstrated that MarketMaker success is about building partnerships to benefit farm and fishery producers," said Gary Matteson, vice president of Young, Beginning, Small Farmer Programs and Outreach.

MarketMaker is an online marketing resource that connects food producers with consumers, restaurants and food markets.
