Mobile payment’s future looks secure

More consumers are interested in using mobile payment systems when they dine out, the National Restaurant Association’s 2016 Restaurant Industry Forecast reports.

According to the research, 20 percent of consumers with smartphones now use a mobile app at least once a month to pay for their restaurant food and 6 percent do so at least once a week.

Overall, 39 percent of smartphone users say they would use mobile payment s in restaurants if the option were available.

More restaurateurs are beginning to embrace the technology or say they plan to add it soon.

In the quickservice segment, 43 percent of operators say they offer mobile payment options and 26 percent say they’re planning to add it in the next year. In the fast-casual segment, 31 percent of restaurateurs say they offer it and another 25 percent say they plan to provide it within a year.

Laura Knapp Chadwick, the NRA’s director of commerce and entrepreneurship, says data security is one of the biggest reasons for restaurateurs to embrace mobile payments.

“Many mobile payment apps encrypt or scramble credit-card information before it ever reaches a restaurant’s mobile payment acceptance terminal,” she says. “This means hackers and criminals pose much less of a security threat. Because the customers’ information is encrypted, it’s one less thing restaurateurs need to worry about protecting on the back end.”
