NRA, other business groups urge repeal of employer mandate

The National Restaurant Association and its allies in the Small Business Coalition for Affordable Health Care again went on record last week as the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee held a hearing on the effects of the 2010 health care law's employer mandate on businesses and jobs.

Starting in 2014, the employer mandate will require businesses with 50 or more full-time-equivalent employees to offer full-time employees and their dependents and "affordable" health plan that offers "minimum value."

Penalties may be assessed against applicable employers who fail to offer government-prescribed insurance and/or whose employees qualify for government "premium tax credits" to buy insurance through state exchanges.

"This onerous mandate will force employers to use their resources and savings to pay these penalties, at the expense of hiring employees, creating jobs, and expanding their businesses," the coalition wrote to subcommittee leaders. "It also establishes a powerful disincentive to hire more than 50 full-time equivalent employees. Thus, it punishes both employers and employees alike."

Coalition members urged support for H.R. 1744, a bill that would repeal the employer mandate.
