NRA Show examines big industry trends

Let's talk trends.

It’s time to look at some of the top issues gaining traction — and how the industry is reacting. Here are five trends everyone is talking about now:

  1. Tip talk. Does eliminating tipping benefit or break a restaurant? The movement toward doing away with gratuity is gaining steam, but many unknowns are associated with the pricing structure.
  2. Full steam ahead for fast casual. As fast casual's growth continues to ramp up, casual-dining establishments are eyeing opportunities to evolve their portfolios. They’re interested in including fast-casual concepts to help reclaim dollars lost to that segment.
  3. Safe sourcing. Chipotle’s recent food sourcing and foodborne illness highlights the importance of carefully tracking food sourcing to prevent potential outbreaks. It's a complex issue that doesn't have a quick fix, but new initiatives are being developed to improve transparency and safety.
  4. Millennials love loyalty programs — under one condition. Loyalty programs are inherent to many dining experiences, but expectations run high from millennials who’ve been raised with easy access to discount-driven websites and social media deals. Restaurateurs must show them value if they want them to keep coming back to dine out.
  5. Online ordering 2.0: A slew of delivery services are vying for operators’ business, and they need to find the right tools to support demand without disrupting service. Learning more about the evolution of online ordering and consumer expectations could have huge implications for restaurants.
