NRA applauds Puzder as labor secretary

The National Restaurant Association applauded President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of CKE Restaurants CEO Andy Puzder as the country’s new Secretary of Labor. Once confirmed, Puzder will lead the Department of Labor starting next year, when the President-elect officially takes office.

Dawn Sweeney, the NRA’s president and CEO, said the industry executive’s appointment would be good for business growth.

“We are excited that Andy Puzder will serve as our nation’s next Secretary of Labor,” she said. “He has a proven track record of turning around struggling businesses, and his background in the restaurant industry will help foster an environment for job creation.”

Sweeney also indicated that Puzder’s experience in the industry and as an active member of the Association would result in his bringing much-needed business savvy and expertise to the Department of Labor.

“The restaurant industry is the second-largest private-sector employer in the country, employing more than 14 million people and producing more than $780 billion in sales annually,” she said. “It’s encouraging that someone who has worked in the industry and understands its vast benefits to the American economy as well as the challenges it currently faces will serve in one of the Administration’s highest posts.”

The 66-year-old Puzder has led CKE Restaurant Holdings Inc., parent company of the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s quickservice burger chains, as well as the Green and Red Burrito Tex-Mex concepts, since 2000.

Recognized in the restaurant industry as a turnaround specialist, Puzder reversed the failing CKE’s financial fortunes when he joined the company as its general counsel in 1994. Today the 3,750-unit company, which operates in 44 states and 40 countries, generates annual revenue of approximately $1.4 billion and boasts nearly 75,000 employees throughout the United States.
