NRA honors media, democracy at 1st ‘Toast’ reception

More than 400 people attended the event, which celebrated our nation's lawmakers, top journalists and media professionals.

Last week, we hosted “A Toast to the First Amendment,” a media reception honoring the work of our nation’s lawmakers, top journalists and media professionals.

The reception, held at our Washington, D.C. headquarters in partnership with the Distilled Spirits Council, the Beer Institute and RealClearPolitics, was attended by more than 400 guests. There, we raised a glass – or two – in celebration of journalism and democracy.

The party was a precursor to the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 29.

“We were extremely excited to join the Distilled Spirits Council, the Beer Institute and RealClearPolitics to honor the media and celebrate one of the most important rights our Constitution bestows on us – the right to free speech,” said Steve Danon, our senior vice president of communications.

Some of our nation’s top media professionals, senior Hill staffers, and Administration officials were on hand for a night of food, fun and festivities.

Attendees included the Washington Post’s Carl Bernstein, CNN’s Brian Stelter, Politico’s Shane Goldmacher, Time magazine’s Zeke Miller, DailyMail.com's Francesca Chambers, Byron Tau of the Wall Street Journal, the Hill’s Ben Kamisar and Bloomberg’s Craig Gordon.

We also welcomed several senior staff members from the offices of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)
